1. EPK - Energy Per Kilogram
Definition: Energy Per Kilogram (EPK) is our innovative and personalised health and performance metric that measures how much energy a person expends, requires, or produces relative to their total body weight. Rather than looking at flat, generic numbers, EPK scales energy data to your specific body mass.
How it is Measured: Depending on the context, human EPK is typically measured in kilocalories per kilogram (kcal/kg) when tracking metabolism and daily nutritional needs, or in Watts per kilogram (W/kg) when measuring athletic power output and exertion.
Why it Matters: Absolute numbers can be misleading. A 100 kg person naturally burns more total calories at rest than a 60 kg person simply because they have more mass to sustain. EPK levels the playing field. By tracking Energy Per Kilogram, you can get a highly accurate picture of your true metabolic efficiency, dial in precise nutritional requirements, and measure relative athletic performance regardless of your size.
2. AEE - Active Energy Expenditure
Definition: Active Energy Expenditure is the total amount of energy your body burns strictly through physical movement. It is separate from your resting metabolism (the energy needed just to stay alive). AEE includes everything from structured workouts (like running or lifting weights) to non-exercise movements (like walking to the store, taking the stairs, or even fidgeting).
How it is Measured: Typically measured in kilocalories (kcal) or kilojoules (kJ) per day.
Why it Matters: While your resting metabolism stays relatively flat day-to-day, AEE is the energy variable you have the most direct control over. Isolating your AEE allows you to see exactly how your daily lifestyle, training intensity, and general activity levels impact your total energy requirements and EPK metrics.
